My landlord hasn't given me the government information sheet — what do I do?

🙋 Does This Apply to Me?Last verified: May 2026England only

Your landlord is required to give you the Renters' Rights Act Information Sheet 2026 by 31 May 2026. If they haven't done it by then, they are breaking the law and can be fined up to £7,000.

The information sheet is an official government document that explains your new rights as a tenant under the Renters' Rights Act 2025. Every private landlord with an assured or assured shorthold tenancy must give a copy to every tenant named on the agreement. They must give you the actual PDF — not a link to it.

If the deadline passes and you haven't received it, write to your landlord or letting agent by email asking them to provide it. Keep a copy of that email. If they still don't send it, you can report the failure to your local council's housing enforcement team.

The information sheet is downloadable from GOV.UK — search "Renters' Rights Act Information Sheet 2026." You can read it yourself to understand your rights regardless of whether your landlord provides it.

Failing to provide the sheet doesn't change your actual rights. Your protections under the Renters' Rights Act apply automatically whether or not your landlord hands you the document. But it is still a legal breach worth reporting if they miss the deadline.
